Yemen ex-president Abdullah Saleh killed

  • Supporters of Shiite Houthi rebels attend a rally in Sanaa Yemen following the killing of ex President Ali Abdullah Saleh

President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi called on Yemenis to unite against the Iran-backed insurgents who shot Ali Abdullah Saleh dead as he fled the city following the collapse of their alliance.

The Saudi-led coalition warned the city's residents to evacuate rebel-controlled areas, as global aid groups warned Monday they were losing the ability to reach civilians in Sanaa.

Yemen's minister of information called upon the Houthi armed group to release the journalists and urged worldwide organisations to "leave the status of passive onlookers and take acts to press the militias to stop tormenting all the Yemeni journalists", Muammar Al- Eryani told Saba Net.

Saleh, who ruled Yemen for three decades, had joined forces with the Shiite Huthi rebels in 2014 when they took control of large parts of the country, including the capital, Sanaa.

It was not immediately clear if the rebels would allow Saleh's family to hold a funeral later in the day.

A video by Yemen's Houthi rebels allegedly shows the slain body of the country's former leader Ali Abdullah Saleh.

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters Tuesday that Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed called the killing of Yemen's former President Ali Abdullah Saleh and others "an adverse development" that will "constitute a considerable change to the political dynamics in Yemen".

Earlier in the day, Yemen's Interior Ministry issued a statement confirming the death of Saleh during clashes in capital Sana'a.

On Monday, Leader of Yemen's Ansarullah movement, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, said the movement has managed to thwart a major threat to the country's security by defeating the plot hatched by former president, Saleh, and his militia.

Strongman Saleh had on Saturday bypassed his Houthi allies of three years, telling the Saudi-led military coalition in Yemen he was ready to negotiate if the crippling siege could be lifted.

Saleh's vehicle was struck by an RPG fire on Monday and he was later shot to death, raising questions about what happens next in the almost three-year war that has killed at least 10 000 people.

It also shatters hopes by Yemen's Saudi-backed government that Saleh's recent split with the Iranian-backed rebels, known as Houthis, would have weakened them and given the government and the Saudi coalition backing a chance for a turning point in the stalemated war that has brought humanitarian disaster.

The fighting has claimed more than 10,000 lives since then.

A least 234 people were killed in fighting that the International Committee of the Red Cross described as the fiercest since the start of the conflict.

"They obviously care about USA support", Corker said.
