  • Australian Parliament allows same-sex marriage

The Australian House of Representatives on Thursday almost unanimously approved a bill that would extend marriage rights for same-sex couples.

As most of us know, once gay Australians are allowed to Wednesday, the definition of who can marry will no longer be "a man and a woman" but instead "two people".

More than 100 MPs have delivered speeches on the issue this week and most support a change to the definition of marriage.

Australia became the 26th country to legalize same-sex marriages. BUT because it was such a huge majority in support, the bill was passed regardless.

"In the course of this week, many hours have been taken up with Labor Party motions about citizenship and penalty rates, matters that could properly have been dealt with after marriage had been dealt with, but no the Labor Party rushed their motion in in the hope that they would get it voted on before the Member for New England made his return".

"The amendments. go very much, again, to the heart of religious liberty that we've seen voted down again and again today in this house", George Christensen, a coalition MP for Dawson, declared on the floor of the House.

Five lawmakers have registered their opposition to Australia's bill allowing same-sex marriage across the nation.

Among them was Christine Forster, the gay sister of Tony Abbott, the former Australian Prime Minister who has always been seen as the face of the "no" campaign.

Marriage equality supporters in the parliament's public gallery sang the chorus of the Seekers song I Am Australian - "We'll share a dream and sing with one voice, I am, you are, we are Australian" - after the vote passed.

Prime Minister Turnbull campaigned in 2015 on the promise of having a revisitation of Australia's marriage laws.

"My wife and I just celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary but later this year we may be getting a divorce", Jensen told a local newspaper.

Australia joins about two dozen countries around the world, including Germany, which have legalized same-sex marriage.

"To every young LGBTI Australian across the nation, today ensures there will never be a question about whether you can have the same dreams, aspirations and opportunities as your brothers, sisters and friends".

The vote came after Australians voted "yes" following a two-month national same-sex marriage survey.
