Apple also said it would lower the price for iPhone battery replacements, and add new features to iOS to provide greater transparency into battery health.

Apple is likely to come out on top whether people buy new phones or upgrade their battery, an analyst says. It'd be great for Apple to give users a way to decide for themselves whether they want to slow down the iPhone, or not.

Apple issued a formal apology for throttling older iPhones, but some wonder if it is enough.

Given Apple's wording, it may be a while before it has sufficient quantities of batteries to meet demand for customers bringing in their old iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s devices to reclaim lost performance, which was brought on by Apple's iOS software "features".

We realize that some of you feel Apple has disappointed you.

Unfortunately, the company's admission to slowing down iPhones spurred some lawsuits around the world. If you're interested in getting a cheap replacement battery - and at $29, it's hard to refuse - simply make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar, or get in touch with Apple if you'd prefer to mail off your phone. The company said the move was necessary to stop unexpected shutdowns due to battery fatigue. Which is likely what has forced Apple into having to take measures to placate its demanding customer base. Apple is not the only one struggling to keep the lithium-ion cells running properly, with Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 also appearing to suffer from battery related problems.

After many Apple customers learned that, they were not pleased. But the program offering $29 battery replacement is now being launched sooner than expected.

But Apple maintains that it cut the CPU performance of older models using software updates in an effort to improve battery life.

For any out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacements, Apple normally charges $79, but this time it reduced this price by nearly $50 following a series of controversy over the process of its dynamically handling the top performance of some earlier iPhone models, having degraded batteries for preventing unexpected power offs.
