  • 4.4 magnitude earthquake in Berkeley rattles Bay Area residents

A 4.5 magnitude natural disaster with an epicenter east of Berkeley shook the San Francisco bay area at 2:39 a.m. early Thursday morning.

No damage or injuries were immediately recorded.

In the last 10 days, there has been one natural disaster of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby. The quake was downgraded to a magnitude 4.4 after initial data suggested it was larger.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was 35 miles from Dana Point, 36 miles from Laguna Beach and 36 miles from Newport Beach. "[If it's] a magnitude 6 or so you might start feeling it even if you're 50-60 miles away". The shaking was felt across the Bay Area. "It's possible if the quake is big enough". The quake on the Hayward Fault was initially reported a higher magnitude but later downgraded.

He also explained that scientists are concerned about that specific fault because it's "kind of overdue".

At a Safeway in San Leandro, one person reported that the quake had knocked down a ceiling panel and also shaken some items from the grocery store shelves.

The USGS placed the epicenter of the natural disaster next to the Claremont Club and Spa in Berkeley. "If there isn't a large quake in the next couple of the days the odds go down".

The last time the fault produced a massive natural disaster was in 1868, when a 6.8-magnitude quake shook the region. But for now and unless something major happens, people in Sacramento are generally safe. It's been 150 years since the last rupture.

A spokesman for the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services said there were no reports of harm to the region.
