Bears expected to hire former OR coach Mark Helfrich as offensive coordinator

  • Why would he be smiling?

He also has connections to longtime college coaches who have made the jump to the National Football League, whether it's Kelly or Dirk Koetter, for whom Helfrich worked at Arizona State and Boise State.

As David Kaplan of Sports Talk Chicago reported, Matt Nagy, who was hired as the Chicago Bears head coach, preferred the Bears over the Colts, in part, because of the uncertainty around Luck.

During his four seasons at Oregon, Helfrich's teams averaged 42.6 points and 536.7 yards per game.

The 2018 NFL Draft should provide plenty of options for Ryan Pace to add play-makers to his offense to prioritize Trubisky's development, even if that means doubling-down at the same position. All of Helfrich's previous coaching experience, beginning in 1996, has been at the college level. Hiestand, who was previously the offensive line coach for Notre Dame, is a well-respected coach and has received excellent reviews from players, coaches and front office executives. But he couldn't maintain Kelly's success - seasons of 11-2, 13-2, 9-4 and 4-8 - and was sacked after the 2016 season. He has seen the college game evolve for many years as a coach and, last season, as a television analyst.

Kelly, the newly-hired UCLA coach, had interest in adding Helfrich as his offensive coordinator, according to Jahns. He coached quarterbacks while at OR, most notably Heisman Trophy victor Marcus Mariota.

So Helfrich won't just be a spread offense guy bringing that system to Chicago.

Nagy spent 10 seasons working under Andy Reid in Philadelphia and Kansas City.

The Bears need to develop Mitch Trubisky, who showed franchise-changing potential as a rookie, and that fits Helfrich's background. He worked under Koetter at Boise State in 1998 and then followed him to Arizona State.
