  • Update: Suspect in custody after possible hostage situation on Greyhound bus

According to a passenger who called the police, the suspect was threatening to kill people.

Vargas-Rosas is being held at the Lake County (Ill.) jail.

Vargas-Rosas was ordered off the bus at gunpoint. The pursuit crossed into Illinois and concluded at the I-94 eastbound exit ramp to Illinois Route 173 where the suspect was taken into custody, Illinois State Police said.

Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said Margarito Vargas-Rosas, 33, lives in Chicago but works at a restaurant in Milwaukee.

Authorities are still not sure if Vargas-Rosas actually possessed a gun on the bus, but Schmaling said he certainly acted as though he might pull one out and use it.

The suspect was saying "he was gonna kill us, that he was going to put a bullet in our head", passenger Patrick Todd said.

"He was acting insane", passenger Patrick Dodd said, according to CNN affiliate WLS.

Police gave chase over the border into IL because the bus driver did not stop, suggesting it may have been a hijacking.

"He didn't stop after the first spike strip", Dodd said. "And then he hit the second spike strip".

The 36 other people on the bus were all unharmed.

Dodd caught the Greyhound in Milwaukee about 8:45 p.m. and was headed to Chicago. He was in the middle of the bus when the confusion started.

"The law is you see emergency lights you pull over", Mr Williams said.

"I think he ultimately recognized that this was a serious event when we spiked his tires", Schmaling said of the driver.

"They treated us like we were criminals, like we did something wrong", Williams said. "We tried to get him to calm down".

"It was insane", he said.

According to the Illinois State Police, troopers were responding to a "possible hostage situation" on the bus.
