Cleveland Indians Are Phasing Out Chief Wahoo Logo

  • End is near for racist baseball mascot

The Cleveland Indians will drop the Chief Wahoo logo next year.

Debuting in 1948, the logo has remained in circulation even as the team has made it less prominent in favor of the new block "C" logo that now adorns their main caps. Native American activist Douglas Cardinal went to Canadian courts to prevent Cleveland from wearing uniforms with Chief Wahoo on them, but the injunction was denied.

"During our constructive conversations, Paul Dolan made clear that there are fans who have a long standing attachment to the logo and its place in the history of the team", says Major League Baseball Commissioner Robert Manfred. However, the logo has become a point of controversy in recent years. One detail from Monday's announcement will surely fail to satisfy both groups: though the team will no longer use Chief Wahoo on uniforms or official banners and signs within Progressive Field, the logo will still be made available on officially-licensed apparel sold in team stores and licensed merchants around the Cleveland area.

The beet red, smiling caricature of a Native American has always been a thorn in the side of those who consider it offensive and racist, with Major League Baseball finding it was no longer appropriate for a team to wear uniforms including Chief Wahoo.

At the start of the 2017 season, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred publicly commented on the team logo for the first time, stating his desire for the team to move away from the insignia.

Philadelphia and Cleveland haven't played since the 2016 season when the Phillies swept a three-games series, which included a Ryan Howard walk-off home run in the 11th inning of the series opener.

The decision to wait until 2019 was meant to give fans and the team time to transition, according to a source familiar with the change.

Despite the forthcoming removal of Chief Wahoo, there has been no discussion over a name-change for the Cleveland Indians.

Several franchises across the sports landscape continue to feature controversial mascots similar to Chief Wahoo.

However, the team will continue to sell merchandise adorned with Chief Wahoo in northeast OH, a decision the AP says was made to keep trademark rules in place. They're not going to have the Chief Wahoo police, so anybody can wear anything they want when coming to the park.

The Washington Redskins of the National Football League are arguably the worst offenders, using an infamous racist slur as the team name.
