  • Crash of Light Plane in Costa Rica Kills 12

A plane carrying 10 US citizens and two local residents crashed in a wooded area, killing everyone on board Sunday, Costa Rican authorities said Sunday.

Punta Islita, on Costa Rica's Pacific Coast, is popular among North American and European tourists for its pristine beaches and lush landscape.

The crash happened near Punta Islita in the Guanacaste province according to Costa Rican officials who posted images of the burning wreckage amid a thicket of trees.

Two Costa Rican crew members and 10 foreigners were on board, the ministry said.

The Cessna 208B, operated by Nature Air, had taken off from Punta Islita Resort, in Nandayure, and was on its way to the capital San Jose. "We are in contact with Costa Rican aviation authorities and will continue to monitor the situation".

Cubillo also reportedly described the pilot, Juan Manuel Retana, as an experienced professional.

An investigation into the cause of the crash will begin first thing Monday, Solis said.

The plane went down in a heavily wooded area.

"It is a private plane with 10 foreign passengers and two local crew members", a separate security ministry statement said.
