  • Facebook is launching another probe to see if Russia pushed Brexit propaganda

British lawmakers probing possible Russian interference in the Brexit referendum revealed on Wednesday (Jan 17) that Facebook had agreed to broaden its own investigation into fake news in the run-up to the vote, after facing criticism of the social media platform's initial efforts.

"I$3 n limiting their investigation to just the Internet Research Agency, Facebook missed that it is only one troll farm which "has existed within a larger disinformation ecosystem in St. Petersburg, " including Glavset, an alleged successor of the Internet Research Agency, and the Federal News Agency, a reported propaganda "media farm, " according to Russian investigative journalists", the report authors write.

"This work requires detailed analysis of historic data by our security experts, who are also engaged in preventing live threats to our service".

Facebook's head of policy, Simon Milner, said in a letter that the company would look for "clusters engaged in coordinated activity around the Brexit referendum" originating in Russian Federation.

A study by the Oxford Internet Institute concluded there was scarce evidence that the Kremlin had exploited the social media platforms to influence the British vote.

Russian Federation denies meddling in Britain's vote to exit the European Union, known as Brexit, or in the 2016 U.S. elections. At the same time, the company announced yesterday that they would begin to notify their US users who were exposed to Russian propaganda. He had ordered the company to investigate the matter more thoroughly.

Facebook said on Wednesday that it will broaden its investigation into whether Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 referendum on Great Britain's membership in the European Union, The Wall Street Journal reports.

"They are best placed to investigate activity on their platform", he said in a statement. The request was part of an inquiry the committee is conducting on fake news. The investigation, however, was limited to a cluster of Russian accounts that had already been identified following probes into activity connected with the United States presidential campaign.
