Late Wednesday, Michigan State University president Lou Ann Simon said she would resign in the wake of Nassar's trial.

Larry Nassar, the former doctor of the United States gymnastic team, who was previously charged with sexually abusing athletes, has been sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison on Wednesday.

The prominent judge who presided over the sexual assault case against US gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar is also a crime novelist. He was a faculty member in the university's College of Osteopathic Medicine until MSU fired him in September 2016.

The USOC is already conducting an independent inquiry into the scandal, although some of the victims have criticized the USOC as well for inaction that allowed Nassar to abuse girls and women unabated for so long.

Shortly after Nassar's sentencing, Simon announced that she would resign her position.

Linsdey Lemke says the threats came after she slammed John Geddert, the head coach of 2012's legendary Olympic gymnastics team, in the courtroom last week. Now, she is out as the university's president.

Nassar, who served as the programme's physician through four Olympic Games, apologised to his victims during the hearing, telling them: "I will carry your words with me for the rest of my days".

Hollis says he did not know about Nassar's abuse until the first survivor came forward in September 2016.

Also on Friday, the US House Energy and Commerce Committee announced it would launch an investigation into sexual abuse in organised sports following Nassar's case.

"When you look at the scope of everything, that's the reason I made a choice to retire now and I hope that it has a little bit, a little bit of helping that healing process".

Others have disputed that assertion.

"Reports of sexual misconduct by Dr. Larry Nassar reached at least 14 Michigan State University representatives in the two decades before his arrest, with no fewer than eight women reporting his actions, a Detroit News investigation has found".

Nassar was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison on seven counts of sexual assualt this week. Ingham County Judge Rosemarie Aquilina imposed the severe sentence after hearing testimony from 156 of Nassar's victims. On Wednesday, a judge sentenced Nassar to 40 to 175 years in prison for 10 sexual assault counts in MI. In December, he was sentenced in federal court to 60 years in prison on three child pornography charges.
