Golden Globes: 5 Actresses Who Brought Activists to the Show

  • She's ace! Emma Stone brings Billie Jean King to Golden Globes after nomination for playing tennis icon

The Globes blackout places particular attention on tonight's broadcast, where actresses are expected to use red carpet interviews and acceptance speeches to address the political moment.

Williams, who is up against Streep for her role in "All the Money in the World", will be joined by Tarana Burke, the founder of the #MeToo movement and the senior director of the nonprofit Girls for Gender Equity.

The women of Time's Up, the official Hollywood initiative to combat sexual harassment both within and beyond the entertainment industry, picked the dress code, encouraging men and women to wear black as a symbol of solidarity with those combating sexual harassment, discrimination, and assault. King was also the recipient of the Presidential Medal Of Freedom and is also the founder of the Billie Jean King Leadership initiative.

Stone's decision to bring King isn't a wholly unprecedented move; in 2015, the year Reese Witherspoon played Cheryl Strayed in Wild, the film based on Strayed's book, she took the author as her date.

Streep - who has been heavily criticized for her response to the allegations against her longtime collaborator Harvey Weinstein - will bring along National Domestic Workers Alliance director and 2014 MacArthur fellow Aj-jen Poo, according to Variety.

From #MeToo creator Tarana Burke to activist Monica Ramirez, check out who the stars brought along to the show.

Susan Sarandon will bring Rosa Clemente, a political commentator and journalist who campaigns for media justice, promotes voting amongst youth of colour, and fights for justice for USA political prisoners. It's now Emma's turn and her generation to do that. "This is a movement where there is space for everyone and there is a role for everyone".

What do you think about the way that the Golden Globes pre-shows are tackling the social issues at hand?

Several actresses are expected to wear all-black ensembles on the Globes red carpet as a protest statement against Hollywood's ongoing sexual abuse scandal.

She said: "There's something about women in Hollywood speaking out".

"Hey! Persons" attending the #GoldenGlobes this Sun (sic),' she tweeted on Saturday.
