  • Google to expand cloud infrastructure with new regions, submarine cables

Google now has direct ownership in as many as eight other undersea cables linking its various data centers around the world.

The three new cables will enable the linking of five new regions for cloud clients: Montreal, the Netherlands, Los Angeles, Finland and Hong Kong.

The company has not specified the total amount of these investments but recalls having spent 30 billion euros in its infrastructure over the last three years.

The cables will be completed in 2019.

Named after Marie Curie, the Curie cable, which will stretch from Chile to LA, will enable Google to address cloud customers throughout Latin America. According to Google there are some distinct benefits to owning the cable directly.

"Overall, these investments mean faster and more reliable connectivity for all users and customers", a Google spokesperson told Mashable. "Also, once the cable is deployed, we can make routing decisions that optimize for latency and availability", he said.

The company said that the new cables would cost hundreds of millions of dollars and take more than a year to install, and it would really prefer not to do it ...

Early work has already begun on selecting the exact route the Havfrue cable will follow.

Google will work with leading social network Facebook and other companies on a "Havfrue" cable linking the USA with Denmark and Ireland. The five regions will be added in 2018 beginning in this quarter, and then three subsea cables will be commissioned in 2019.

The Hong Kong-Guam cable system will help Google reach customers in Australia and the Pacific region.

The Havfrue cable consortium consist of Google, Facebook, Aqua Comms, and Bulk Infrastructure.

Google is also working with Facebook, subsea network manufacturer Aqua Comms, and industrial group Bulk Infrastructure on the Havfrue cable, which will connect the USA east coast to Denmark and Ireland. These investments are created to help improve connectivity around the world, and will help Google expand its reach and the availability of its cloud services.

In all, Google points out that it now has "direct investment" in 11 undersea cables, which seems like a necessary move when you consider that Google's network is providing as much as 25% of global internet traffic. Google promises they are not done yet and there will be additional announcements of other regions.

Other companies have built their own cables too: in September a year ago, Microsoft announced that it had completed construction of the Marea subsea cable, a joint project with Facebook and global telecommunications infrastructure company Telxius.
