  • Militants attack Afghan army post near military academy in Kabul

AFP reported that some of the attackers have been killed with an Afghan security source adding the gunmen had not managed to enter the academy.

"The Afghan National Army is the country's defence force and makes sacrifices for the security and well-being of the people", the ministry said. He said two insurgents were killed in the gun battle and one was arrested by soldiers.

"One bomber detonated himself and the rest of the attackers are resisting".

He said that the attack was against the security personnel and not against the military academy itself.

Islamic State and the Taliban have recently carried out attacks in the city.

Pakistan, which denies accusations it fosters the Afghan war, condemned the attack and called for "concerted efforts and effective cooperation" to tackle militancy.

Kabul police spokesman Basir Mujahid confirmed to AFP there had been rocket and gunfire.

The government has blamed the Taliban-affiliated Haqqani Network, which Afghan and Western officials suspect of involvement in at least some of the recent attacks in the capital.

Kabul resident Mohammad Ehsan said the explosions began at around 5 am and lasted for at least an hour. There are so far no official reports of fatalities or injuries.

Earlier, a series of blasts have been heard neard the military academy, according to witness, Reuters reported.

Afghanistan has been gripped by a spate of deadly attacks over the past two week.
