  • South Korea Hospital Blaze Kills 41 People

Sejong Hospital is a relatively small healthcare facility and the number of patients inside when the fire broke out totaled 177, according to the hospital director.

More than two dozen people were killed after a fire erupted at a hospital in South Korea.

January 26-At least 41 people have died in a fire that broke out at a hospital in Miryang, South Korea, on Friday.

There were 194 patients in the hospital when the fire first began and all 78 individuals in the seniors' ward were evacuated.

The fire started at around 7:20 a.m. local time in the emergency room of the Sejong Hospital located on the ground floor.

The cause of the blaze hasn't been determined, but arson was initially ruled out.

Video footage and pictures showed the building engulfed by heavy dark smoke and surrounded by multiple fire trucks.

Survivors were carried out wrapped in blankets, and firefighters picked their way through the blackened shell of the building after the blaze was extinguished.

"Many victims were from the first and second floors of the hospital. some died on their way to another hospital", he said.

Three of the dead worked at the hospital - an emergency room doctor and a nurse and nurse assistant on the second floor - said Son Kyung-cheol, head of the foundation that operates the facility.

Agency official earlier said numerous deaths were confirmed after the victims were taken to other hospitals while being put on artificial ventilators.

None had been required under fire prevention laws, but the hospital had planned to install them next week to comply with new regulations going into effect in June, he told reporters.

President Moon had convened an emergency meeting of his top aides to order all-out efforts to help minimize damage from the tragic fire and to identify the exact cause of the fire at an early date.

Choi said all the dead were from the hospital's general ward and 94 evacuees were taken to a nursing ward for the elderly.

At least nine people were seriously wounded in the blaze, Yonhap reported, adding that the fire was South Korea's deadliest in a decade. The hospital's operations were suspended after the fire.

A fire agency official says 18 people have been killed and 63 injured in a hospital fire in southeastern South Korea.

This fatal fire comes just a month after a fire in a sports center building that killed 29 people and led to criminal charges for negligence by the building's owners.
