HP Recalls Laptop Batteries

  • HP issues voluntary recall involving lithium-ion battery packs

This time past year HP recalled 100,000 computers due to overheating batteries, which expanded a previous recall of 41,000 units over the same issues.

If you or anyone at your organisation is now using an HP laptop, downloading the utility or looking up the model number to see if the device's battery has been recalled is an absolute must to prevent a fire from occurring at your home or workplace. However, please note that the "Battery Safety Mode" is only applicable to HP products affected by this recall. Some of the affected batteries were also sold as replacements. "HP is proactively notifying customers, and will provide replacement battery services for each verified, eligible battery, at no cost". That might sound like a small percentage, but given how many devices HP shifts in a year, it's still likely to be a fairly substantial figure.

HP Inc Canada has recalled certain lithium-ion batteries compatible with HP notebook computers and mobile workstations.

HP has recalled over 50,000 notebook computers over concerns batteries in selected models can overheat and potentially catch fire.

Specifically, the affected notebook models include the HP ProBooks (64x G2 and G3 series, 65x G2 and G3 series), the HP x360 310 G2, as well as the HP Envy m6, HP Pavilion x360, HP 11, HP ZBook (17 G3, 17 G4, and Studio G3) Mobile Workstations.

This follows eight reports of lithium-ion batteries overheating and/or melting, and in one case causing a first-degree burn to someone's hand, with three further cases citing resulting property damage (presumably caused by fire, of course) to the tune of $4,500.

HP says, "Many of these batteries are internal to the system, which means they are not customer replaceable".

Consumers with these batteries can install an update that will put the device in "battery safe mode" until it can be replaced. If the validation tool indicates your battery is affected, HP said you should "discontinue use of the battery immediately by placing it in Battery Safety Mode". "We are taking immediate action to address this issue including a voluntary recall and replacement of the batteries". The batteries were shipped in notebook computers and mobile workstations sold for between $300 and $4,000. When enabled, Battery Safety Mode will discharge the battery and disable charging until the battery is replaced.
