  • Luis Bracamontes is seen smiling in the courtroom during opening statements

If convicted, Bracamontes could face the death penalty for murdering the two officers, Detective Michael Davis Jr. and Deputy Sheriff Danny Oliver, on the same day in October 2014.

The trial of accused double-cop-killer Luis Bracamontes has started in a Sacramento courtroom, with the prospect of months of testimony before a possible verdict.

"I wish I had killed more of the motherf*ckers", the illegal alien said.

He then vowed: "I will break out soon, and I will kill more, kill whoever gets in front of me". "There's no need for a f-- trial".

Luis Enrique Monroy Bracamontes grinned, then called Brown a "coward" before he was warned by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Steve White to remain silent, The Sacramento Bee reported.

But the judge was having none of it, noting that the issue already had been litigated in previous hearings and that if Bracamontes chooses not to help his lawyers that's up to him. Bracamontes directed some of his cursing toward his brother on the stand as he was removed from the courtroom. Before they came back, Bracamontes' lawyer asked the court to reconsider whether his client was fit to stand trial.

"Your motion is denied".

"Mr. Bracamontes is responsible for the deaths of Deputy Danny Oliver and the death of Detective Michael Davis", Barbour said.

Bracamontes is a Mexican citizen who repeatedly entered the United States illegally.

During opening statements, Bracamontes' attorney said the defense is not trying to prove his innocence.

The case is being held with two juries, one for the death penalty case involving Bracamontes, the other for his wife, Janelle Monroy, who faces up to life in prison.

Bracamontes, 37, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, is on trial along with his wife, Janelle Monroy, 41.

Bracamontes, who has a long history of arrests and has been deported from Arizona twice, faces the death penalty if found guilty. He also reportedly said he wished he would have killed more law enforcement officers as he smiled and laughed.

President Donald Trump has weighed in on the case, mentioning it during a speech to Congress a year ago and introducing the widow of one of the slain deputies.

Separate juries are hearing the cases against the couple. "Please take me with you".

He wrote a suicide note and tried to gas himself in his house before surrendering to authorities.

The preliminary courtroom appearances of Bracamontes, 36, formerly of Salt Lake City, have been dramatically punctuated by outbursts by the accused.
