  • Doctors in Mumbai to protest against NMC bill on January 2 marking it a black day

Healthcare facilities at multiple hospitals across the country have been disrupted Tuesday after thousands of doctors went on a 12-hour strike, in protest against the National Medical Commission Bill.

According to IMA Goa President Ajay Pednekar the routine OPD services of clinics and hospital across Goa will remain closed from 6 am to 6 pm on January 2. However, only the emergency services in the hospitals will continue to function.

The Indian Medical Association Gujarat branch will observe a black day on Tuesday to protest the National Medical Commission Bill that was tabled in the Lok Sabha. The Ministry has also sought a compliance report from the hospitals.

"The Medical Council of India is a representative body of the medical profession in India. The new bill will increase corruption and no one will be afraid of private medical colleges".

The strike call was given by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

"We want the central government to reconsider the National Medical Commission Bill". "We have heard them and also presented our views". Certain provisions of the NMC like allowing practitioners of Indian medicine like Ayurveda and Homeopathy to practice Allopathy after completing a bridge course. "Secondly, the NMC will make medical education another fertile ground for bureaucratic red tapism". Senior doctors from IMA are protesting another proposal of NMC which allows unrestricted fee in 60 per cent of medical seats in private medical colleges.

The commission will have a government-nominated chairman and members, and the board members will be selected by a search committee under the Cabinet Secretary, it says.

The IMA statement said the Bill bestows such widespread power to the Board that it was liable to be misused.

Similarly in Karnataka, hundreds of private hospitals shut their OPDs to protest against the NMC Bill, 2017.
