Iran Mocks Trump 'Blunder' As Government Supporters Rally

  • US faces criticism at Security Council meeting on Iran protests

At the forefront of resistance to the Islamist mullahs' bloody crackdown on pro-democratic protesters are U.S. Ambassador to U.N. Nikki Haley and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin. Iran's Ambassador Gholamali Khoshroo slammed the meeting as a "farce" and a "waste of time" and said the Council should instead focus on addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or the war in Yemen.

Russia, a close ally of Iran's, agreed.

Envoys from several other countries including China expressed reservations about whether the council was the right place to debate the issue.

The matter of whether the UNSC can exercise jurisdiction over the internal situation in Iran, that gave rise to mass demonstrations across the entire country with the death toll reaching over 50 and hundreds others injured or arrested by Iranian security forces, is debatable.

Still, the United Nations charter empowers the council to "investigate any dispute, or any situation which might lead to worldwide friction", and the USA wasn't alone in thinking the Iranian protests qualified.

Thousands of government supporters staged rallies in Iran for a fourth day on Saturday, in a backlash against widespread protests that the clerical establishment has blamed on the country's enemies.

France's ambassador to the United Nations told the meeting that recent protests in Iran do not threaten global peace and security. Now they want to go after Iran.

But France's ambassador, Francois Delattre, urged caution, saying the council should act "with all the vigilance required, guarding against any exploitation of this crisis, which would only reinforce the extremes".

"It's another attempt [at bullying] by the USA, which has lost authority and credibility in the eyes of the whole world", said Khoshroo.

Khoshroo said Iran has "hard evidence" that violence is being directed from overseas, and went on to describe recent instances in which foreign citizens have incited violence in Iran.

The president's tweets have not called for violence or disruptive acts, but he has commended them.

He discussed the cancellation of the visit of the french foreign minister to Tehran during the previous week and said "this is unacceptable that a country has the largest number of economic agreements with Iran on paper, but adopts political and security policies that are totally against our country".

I agree with Roger Cohen that the Trump administration "should stop berating the nuclear deal". Up to 42,000 people took part in the protests, according to Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, who has said the clerically overseen government exhibited "tolerance" toward the demonstrations.
