Publication of the list comes nine months after Israel passed a law banning foreigners who support boycotting the country.

Erdan said the blacklisted groups had consistently acted against Israel by exerting pressures on worldwide groups, institutions and states to boycott Israel.

According to Israel's Ministry of strategic Affairs, the banned groups from Europe are- AFPS (The Association France Palestine Solidarite), BDS France, BDS Italy, ECCP (The European Coordination of Committees and Associations for Palestine), FOA (Friends of Al Aqsa), IPSC (Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign), Norge Palestinakomitee (The Palestine Committee of Norway), Palestinagrupperna i Sverige (PGS- Palestine Solidarity Association in Sweden), PSC (Palestine Solidarity Campaign), War on Want and BDS Kampagne.

"We answered the call for divestment from apartheid South Africa and we have done the same with the call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions from Palestinians who have faced decades of human rights violations", said Kerri Kennedy, an AFSC official.

The statement from Erdan's office said that the proscribed NGOs were "the main boycott organisations which operate consistently and continuously against the state of Israel, while putting pressure on organisations, institutions and countries to boycott Israel". The movement has, predictably, caused anxiety among Israelis.

Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan declared in a statement that the move reflected how Israel has "moved from defense to attack" and called out the BDS movement for spreading "false propaganda". His strategic affairs ministry has a budget of around $36 million to make counter-plan to tackle the BDS movement. "No country would have allowed critics coming to harm the country to enter it".

Interior Minister Aryeh Deri denounced BDS for "trying to exploit the law and our hospitality in order to act against Israel and to defame the country".

"As the minister in charge of the Israel Entry Law, I made it perfectly clear that I would use my authority to prevent individuals and representatives of groups whose sole goal is to harm Israel and its security, from entering its borders".

Rebecca Vilkomerson, executive director of Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), said Israel's act was "disconcerting but not surprising". A message from Vaknin-Gil confirmed, "Dan Diker and the JCPA provided wonderful research on the BDS, anti-normalization and delegitimization phenomena that really needed to be done to ensure that this global campaign can be contained".

According to Diker, "Over the last two years the government has done a lot of homework to determine who are the worst violators in the BDS campaign that completely reject Israel's very right to exist as a Jewish State".
