Lindsey Graham: Immigration Deals Undercut by Stephen Miller

  • Sen. Lindsey Graham

Immigration and border security funding continue to be the primary sticking points preventing progress towards ending the shutdown. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) told reporters on Sunday. He's here to push the president's agenda like everybody in this building.

"His view of immigration has never been in the mainstream of the Senate", Graham said, describing Miller as an advocate of reduced overall USA immigration. "They hold us back from getting a solution", he wrote.

"Thank you for calling the White House", the recording said. As the Senate minority leader, Chuck Schumer, explained last Saturday, "it's next to impossible to strike a deal with the President because he can't stick to the terms," CNN reported.

The key policies at stake are Mr Trump's proposed border wall with Mexico and the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme, which allows people brought to the United States as undocumented immigrants when they were minors to remain in the U.S. legally and avoid deportation. Miller is a hard-line anti-immigration ideologue. Before heading into a meeting with senators from both sides of the aisle, Graham laid into White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller to a large assembly of reporters. "As long as Stephen Miller is in charge of negotiating immigration, we're going nowhere", Graham said.

The Senate will vote at noon Monday to consider a continuing resolution bill that would reopen and fund the government until February 8 and reauthorize the Children's Health Insurance Program. But mistrust is high between Senate Democrats, who have enough votes to force another shutdown if their immigration demands aren't met, and Trump. Some other staff in the White House hold extreme and unrealistic views. And Trump's critics say that his chief of staff wields unique influence as the power broker for a president with limited fidelity to policy positions.

For media like the Post, Miller could be considered the main "puppeteer" in the White House show, and some representatives of the GOP have not hesitated to denounce it. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., for the flip-flop.

"If he had been willing to accept any one of these deals we wouldn't be where we are today", he said.

Miller, who for years was on the frontlines of the immigration battle representing hardline conservative interests, is, along with Trump, is pushing for revisions to the legal immigration system and funding for a massive wall along the USA southern border as a part of any DACA agreement. And he served as then-senator Jeff Sessions' communications director.

'The White House staff, I think, is making it very hard, ' he told reporters at the Capitol.

"Stephen's been incredibly helpful", Short said.

"I think he has a good understanding of what will sell", he continued.

Kelly has established his own hard-line bona fides on the immigration. He is instead a stickler for the law, the official said.

DACA, the program protecting illegal immigrants brought to the U.S.as children, expires in March, but the agreement for reopening the government hinged on promises from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to bring a bill to the Senate floor dealing with it and other immigration matters, if no deal is struck by February 8.
