Meet The "chaiOS" Bug That Can Freeze Your iPhone With A Link

19 January, 2018, 02:06 | Author: Darren Santiago

A security researcher, Abraham Masri, has discovered a new bug within Apple software that causes iPhones and Macs to crash if they receive a message containing a specific website link.

So, if you're an iPhone 6/6 Plus user and you're considering not upgrading to the latest version of iOS because you're afraid that the performance of your phone is going to tank - don't!

Security researchers have warned about a devastating text bomb SMS that if opened will crash any iPhone or iPad. Their devices froze and crashed. Hence, when this URL is received by any iOS user, it tries to load the preview and hence causes the crash. He explained he only published the alert to force Apple into dealing with his initial bug report.

Last year, Apple launched a first-of-its-kind App Accelerator in Bengaluru and it has already trained thousands of iOS developers.

Twitter user Eric Ramirez suggests blocking the GitHub domain within Safari restrictions on your iPhone under "Limit Adult Content" to prevent the link having any effect for as long as it's hosted on GitHub.

Experts have not pinpointed the exact cause of the chaiOS bug just yet, but unlike Effective Power, chaiOS also works on macOS, not just iOS devices. Apple quickly fixed the bug and of course, nothing ever went wrong with an Apple product again.

"Ashamed about the mess it gets itself in, Messages decides the least embarrassing thing to do is to crash".

"My GitHub is publicly accessible, so anyone can copy [the code]".

Apple has yet to release a fix for the bug, but it's likely that the company is aware of the issue, according to The Sun.
