  • 13 People Injured In Passenger Train Crash At Sydney Station

An elderly woman and several others have been injured after a Sydney suburban train hit a railway buffer "at speed" at Richmond Station in the city's northwest, in a scene that witnesses described as "chaotic".

Fifteen ambulance vehicles were deployed to the scene, together with two rescue helicopters, with the patients taken to four hospitals in the region.

NSW Ambulance spokesman Paul Turner said it was chaos, but things could have been much worse.

Richmond is a terminus station on the Sydney Trains network.

One traveller Brett Saunders described the experience when train hit buffers at the end of the line as "horrifying". "All the dividers in between the carriages are smashed, completely crushed flat on every single one, that's how fast it was going".

Police said 11 people were treated at a nearby oval after the accident, and although five people remained on the train to be treated no one was trapped. "There are reports of cuts and bruises".

"It is very concerning [and our] first concern is for those involved in the incidents", he said.

Officials said it is too soon to determine the cause of the crash.

A Sydney Trains staff member may have suffered broken ribs, he said. "There was a huge amount of dust", he said.

"[But] it's still on the rails, and not derailed", he said. "I watched train hit the barrier then bounce up and came back down again hard".

Train unions say they will push ahead with a planned strike next week after they failed to reach a deal with Sydney and New South Wales Trains management during late-night talks over pay and conditions.
