"The North helped us proceed smoothly with the inspection", Lee was quoted as saying by Yonhap after returning to South Korea.

They will compete as Korea under the unification flag and the anthem "Arirang", a traditional Korean song often considered an unofficial national anthem which is estimated to be 2,000 years old.

A delegation of North Korean officials and ice hockey players crossed the heavily guarded border into South Korea on Thursday for joint Olympics training, as Pyongyang called for all Koreans to seek unification of the two nations.

North Korea is preparing to stage a major event on February 8, 2018, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of its military's founding - just one day before the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in South Korea.

What these past talks show is that reconciliation has not been sustainable without the tangible progress in eliminating North Korea's nuclear capabilities.

South Korea last month seized two ships suspected of transferring oil products to North Korea.

The claim comes from South Korean foreign minister, Kang Kyung-Wha, who has been speaking to reporters on the fringes of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The U.S. intelligence community still considers the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to be a "rational actor", Pompeo said at the American Enterprise Institute. With Pyongyang's increased threat, the South Korean government will have to work more closely with other countries now implementing sanctions against Pyongyang.

North Korea's government meanwhile voiced its support for the effort "to bring great changes to the north-south relations.' In fact, North Koreans want 'a new history of independent reunification" to begin as soon as possible, official statements have underlined.

The DPRK reiterated its stance that the two Koreas "can't expect a bright future of improving the North-South relations" if the "acute military tensions" caused by joint exercises continue on the peninsula. Writing for the News Lens, Professor Francis Grice believes North Korea is talking to South Korea to save time for their own missile development.

"We can not help but ask once again whether this is the PyeongChang Winter Olympics or the Pyongyang Olympics", Rep. Kim Sung-tae, the party's floor leader, said during a party meeting.

South Korea has sent a group of officials to North Korea to inspect preparations for a joint cultural event at the North's scenic Diamond Mountain and a practice session for the countries' non-Olympic skiers at the North's Masik ski resort the Koreas plan to hold before the start of the Olympics.
