New Vivo Smartphone Has Fingerprint Scanner In The Display

  • A new phone from Chinese maker Vivo has its fingerprint reader embedded in its screen using a technology from Synaptics

Rather, according to that report, which cited comments from a "reputable tech researcher" made on Chinese social media, it will be Vivo (makers of high-end Android smartphones like the Xplay6) who'll be first to publicly demonstrate and lay out plans for implementing the technology.

The showcasing of the world's first in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone (ready for mass-production) marks a significant leap forward in the industry's development, taking users' smartphone experience to a new level. Vivo did show off the technology in 2017, where it was built into a prototype device, but this time around it's in a phone that will actually be launched.

Now, with this latest technology, users can just press the fingerprint graphic on the screen to perform unlocking, payment, and other tasks.

The new technology also allows phones to be thinner, and the Vivo phone is certainly slim - which is good, because the huge display makes it both tall and wide. It has its limitations, where it only work with the phones that use OLED displays as the sensor looks through the spaces between subpixels from under the panel.

However, maybe you prefer fingerprint sensor over even a state-of-the-art face unlocking like Face ID, and you definitely want it in the front because you need to unlock the phone a billion times a day while it's laying on the desk, and you still want a huge display that takes up almost all the room from the front face of the phone. The imprint will be removed by illuminating the finger with light. Even though the sensor is hidden from view, it's still able to read your fingerprint in less than a second-0.7 seconds to be exact, Synaptics said. Once the fingerprint is registered, unlocking the phone works just fine, like any other physical fingerprint sensors.

What's it like to use?

We demoed the fingerprint scanner and we have to say the near-final solution is solid. The fingerprint reader itself is about the size of a small coin and works by scanning your finger through the tiny gaps found along the phone's pixels.

Once we touch or apply stress on the surface, our fingerprint is registered.

The actual phone that we demoed with vivo is still not finalized.

Can I see it in action?

"The company emphasized the solution's capability of accommodating full-size displays that take up nearly the entire front face of a mobile device, and the convenience of maintaining a front-facing fingerprint scanning system with respect to the user experience". Hopefully, it won't be long until consumers can get their hands on the new vivo smartphone.

Pricing is also now unknown, but the likelihood is that this will be an expensive handset. As with any new technology, it will take a few iterations to refine. Vivo In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology replaces the physical fingerprint button on the screen, laying the foundation for a truly immersive experience.

Until then, what do you think of the under-screen fingerprint scanner? Vivo SVP Alex Feng said of the device, "We are very excited to make it available to consumers soon".
