NFL Network's Ian Rapoport: Packers hire Brian Gutekunst as new GM

08 January, 2018, 05:09 | Author: Sylvester Abbott
  • Green Bay Packers hire Brian Gutekunst as GM, so John Schneider stays put in Seattle

After 13 years, Green Bays' general manager Ted Thompson stepped down from the position on Tuesday and reports immediately began to surface regarding the Packers' interest in Schneider.

Seahawks fans can rest easy now knowing general manager John Schneider will be staying in Seattle.

According to Rapoport, Gutekunst signed a five-year deal.

Gutekunst played football at UW-La Crosse for two years, then became an assistant coach for the team after a shoulder injury cut his college career short.

That may be their only resort after the Seahawks denied the Packers permission to interview Schneider for their GM job, a source confirmed Saturday.

The Green Bay Packers are promoting Brian Gutekunst to the general manager position, multiple outlets reported on Sunday. He also worked for the Seahawks and Redskins before returning to the Packers in 2002, where he remained until the Seahawks made him their GM in 2010. Schneider is locked up in Seattle through 2021.

Gutekunst may not have been the Packers' first choice.

With Wolf and Ball being passed over, it wouldn't be stunning to see either or both leave to pursue other opportunities.

It's possible Green Bay will still make philosophical changes to its coaching and scouting methods, and it seems likely Gutekunst's promotion will coincide with a more active approach in free agency and on the trade market - two avenues Thompson was infamously loathe to travel down.
