Washinton:US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis says that Olympics talks between North and South Korea should not lead to distraction from the goal of denuclearizing Pyongyang. They also expressed their commitment to upholding a strong, effective and credible readiness posture to underpin the ongoing diplomatic efforts toward the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.‎ The two sides discussed the recent Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Security and Stability on the Korean Peninsula in Vancouver as an example of such diplomatic efforts. "It's an worldwide problem that requires an global solution".

Washington agreed to delay them until after the Olympics, which will be held on February 9-25 in the South Korean alpine town of Pyeongchang.

"Our response to this threat remains diplomacy led, backed up with military options available to ensure that our diplomats are understood to be speaking from a position of strength", the secretary explained. The Pentagon released a record of the two ministers' conversation ahead of the talks, in which Mattis was quoted as saying the Kim Jong-un regime in North Korea was a "threat to the entire world".

Song also urged regional countries to join in the worldwide community's efforts to enforce a UN Security Council resolution that bans ship-to-ship transfer of goods - particularly oil - destined for Pyongyang. "And at the same time, [they remain] steadfast that the global economic pressure campaign can denuclearize the Korean Peninsula".

Mattis said the United States and South Korea welcome the Olympic Games talks between North Korea and South Korea, but at the same time, "remain steadfast with the worldwide economic pressure campaign to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula".

"South Korea, for the first time in recent times, suggests the North's crisis should be resolved diplomatically".

His remarks came as the two Koreas are seeking to ease military tension and improve inter-Korean ties through the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, though concern persists over North Korea's relentless nuclear ambition, as the North is preparing for a massive military parade to coincide with the Olympics.

Lee is the widow of former South Korean President and Nobel Peace Prize victor Kim Dae-jung, who is remembered for his rapprochement policies with the North that led to a historic summit with late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il in 2000. Russian Federation and China, both critical votes on the U.N. Security Council that backed the sanctions, stand accused of helping North Korea smuggle shipments out, with President Trump telling Reuters that Russian Federation was violating sanctions and the usa filing a report with the U.N. accusing Chinese ships of aiding the North Korean regime.

"We're deconflicting during the period of the Olympics, and exercises will continue immediately after the Olympics", joint staff director Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie said Thursday during a press briefing in Washington. During the meeting, Song also shared information on preparations for the handover of wartime operational control of the South Korean military and progress in national defense reforms, the ministry said.
