  • President Kovind addressing the joint sitting of both the Houses of the Parliament

BJP MP Varun Gandhi has urged Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan to initiate a "movement" where rich MPs forgo their salaries for the remaining term of the present (16th) Lok Sabha.

The meeting was attended by Modi, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley and Ananth Kumar, besides the Opposition leaders such as Mallikarjun Kharge (Congress) Mulayam Singh Yadav (SP), D Raja (CPI), Kanimozhi (DMK), Derek O'Brien and Sudip Bandhopadhyay (TMC) and Tariq Anwar (NCP).

"And I am hopeful that Parliament will pass the Bill", Kovind said in his address to the joint sitting of the both Houses.

"My government has brought the Triple Talaq Bill to safeguard the rights of the Muslim women". Kumar said the "government will do everything to ensure passage of the triple talaq bill in the session".

In the meeting, which lasted more than an hour, the speaker requested all political parties to cooperate for smooth conduct of the session. "Like GST was passed by consensus, this bill seeking to ban the practice of instant triple talaq (talaq-e-biddat) among Muslims will be passed", Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kumar said, addressing the media after an all-party meeting.

According to a report by The Hindustan Times, Gandhi has said that parliamentarians in India now have the authority to determine their remunerations.

Earlier Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said the union budget will give a new flight to the fast growing economy of the country as the budget session is commencing on Monday. "Opposition raised some concerns during the all party meeting on Sunday and so we expect that there will be disruption on a few issues", a senior leader of the NDA said, requesting anonymity.

The budget session is split into two parts. Kovind also made it clear that the Narendra Modi government will do everything to empower the minorities but not appease them. The first spell of the session will end on February 9.
