  • HP recalls select laptop batteries due to “fire and burn hazards” ars_ab.settitle(1240099);

Over 50000 HP notebook computers and mobile workstations have been affected in the United States, with an additional 2600 hit by the issue in Canada.

The company has issued a recall due to the fact the batteries have the potential to overheat and pose a fire and burn risk to customers.

HP is recalling about 50,000 consumer notebook batteries for free, which were originally sold as part of a HP notebook itself or as a standalone accessory.

Affected models include HP ProBook, HP ZBook, HP x360, HP Envy m6, HP Pavilion x360 laptops and more.

The batteries were also sold as accessories or replacement batteries for the HP ZBook Studio G4 mobile workstation. They were sold separately as replacement batteries.

There have been eight reports of the batteries overheating, melting or charring, including three reports of property damage. One person suffered a first degree burn on their hand.

Battery Safety Mode is only applicable to HP products affected by this recall. As these batteries are sealed inside the laptop, a qualified technician will be called upon to carry out the replacement.

"HP's primary concern is for the safety of our customers", a company statement read.

"We are taking immediate action to address this issue including a voluntary recall and replacement of the batteries". Instead, HP has developed a BIOS update that will put the battery into a "battery safety mode". "This action pertains to 0.1 percent of the HP systems sold globally over the past two years". As long as it's enabled, this mode will deplete the battery and prevent it from charging again. Users will still be able to use the device but only when connected to an HP power adapter. The website also has instructions for customers to initiate the validation utility to check their battery and what to download if their battery is included in the recall.

If this story has provoked a certain degree of déjà vu in your mind, that's probably not surprising, given that at the start of a year ago, HP issued a battery recall due to fire risk concerns.
