[RUMOR] Apple is expanding iPhone X lineup

  • Rejig in sales strategy: Ecommerce discounts on iPhones may soon be over

A leading Apple analyst says that Apple's resources may be stretched too thin to come out with a successor to its tiniest iPhone.

Apple will slash its production target for the iPhone X in the three-month period by half from January from the more than 40 million units envisaged at the time of its release in November.

Smartphone buyers are not all that impressed with the iPhone X. According to a new report released by Nikkei, Apple saw "slower-than-expected" sales in major markets like US, Europe and China during the holiday season.

With a legendary track record - most recently including correct predictions of the iPhone X's 5.8-inch OLED display, facial recognition and augmented reality technology, and $1500 starting price - Ming-Chi Kuo's status is well-deserved. At the end of December, analyst Zhang Bin from Sinolink Securities Co. Increased output, coupled with decreased iPhone X-related demand, could cause NAND prices to slide further.

The report added to growing concerns about weak sales of the US$999 phone, making investors jittery about the company's financial outlook when it reports first-quarter results on Thursday. Now this week, it is being reported that Apple is already reducing its production targets for the iPhone X, indicating that perhaps the phone isn't selling as much as originally hoped.

The speculation is that the 6.1 inch phone will essentially be a scaled down iPhone X. However, its screen will not be an OLED, but rather an LCD. Following a downgrade to an investment recommendation for Sony last week, other iPhone X-related Japanese electronic parts manufacturers also saw their share prices decline.

Adding to the concerns, Verizon Communications said last week its postpaid device activations were lower than past year as people were keeping phones longer.
