San Francisco Giants Acquire Andrew McCutchen

  • Report: Pirates trade McCutchen to Giants

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic is reporting that the team has agreed to acquire center fielder Andrew McCutchen from the Pirates, pending a review of medical records.

After trading Gerrit Cole to the Houston Astros, it was believed that McCutchen would be the next in line to be dealt.

The Pittsburgh Pirates parted ways with one-time MVP victor and five-time All-Star Andrew McCutchen, sending him to the San Francisco Giants.

The deal is still being finalized and it is not exactly clear who the Giants are sending to the Pirates. NBC Sports Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic and the Washington Post's Jorge Castillo confirmed that top prospects Heliot Ramos, Chris Shaw and Tyler Beede aren't part of the deal.

The San Francisco Giants have acquired an upgrade in the outfield. The 2013 National League Most Valuable player is coming off a season in which he slugged 28 home runs and drove in 88 runs. With one year and $14.5 million remaining on his current contract, the seasoned center fielder is an affordable source of offense for a team that has already added former Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria this winter. Of course, the Giants need all the help they can get after just enduring a 64-98 season. Barry Bonds left the Pirates to join the Giants as a free agent way back in 1993.

Last season, San Francisco tumbled down the standings as they struggled at the plate. With the additions of Longoria and McCutchen, it's obvious that the Giants are trying to reload for 2018 and compete in a division that sent three teams to the playoffs a year ago.

As of now, the other players involved in the trade have not been announced.
