Schachtner: Win shows voters exhausted of negativity

"I have always prided myself on being trustworthy, but there's a lot of people that voted for me that don't know me that trust me", Schachtner said in an interview after her victory.
Following Doug Jones's triumph in Alabama and Ralph Northam's victory in Virginia, Tuesday's special election saw Democrat Patty Schachtner unexpectedly claim a contentious Wisconsin state Senate seat. In contrast, Trump beat Hillary Clinton in that same district by 17 points in 2016. For the last 17 years, the seat was held by Republican state Senator Sheila Harsdorf, who stepped down in November to serve as Governor Scott Walker's agriculture secretary. "Every seat is in play for Democrats in 2018".
Schachtner is just the latest Democrat to win a seat that had once been considered virtually unwinnable for the party.
She said she will continue on in her role as medical examiner, but likely with a more administrative focus and less emphasis on death investigations. Republicans will go into the fall campaign season with an 18-14 majority and one vacancy.
"Senate District 10 special election by a Democrat is a wake up call for Republicans in Wisconsin", Walker tweeted.
Meanwhile, Wisconsin Republicans, led by the governor, referred to the 10th District election as a "wake-up call" that should motivate GOP voters to protect the party's total control of state government.
After victories in Republican strongholds in recent months, beleaguered Democrats had one more reason to use the term "blue wave" after Patty Schachtner scored an upset win for a northwestern Wisconsin Senate seat Tuesday.
Jarchow, of Balsam Lake, tweeted that he had called Schachtner to congratulate her on the win, in a race that received statewide and even national attention.
"From collective bargaining reform and Right to Work to welfare reform, everything we have done is at risk if we don't win in November", Walker said Wednesday in a fundraising letter. And he's not the only one who feels that way.
Meanwhile, some democrats say it's a sign of the future. Walker worked with Trump a year ago on a much-criticized scheme to lure a manufacturing facility being developed by the Taiwanese-based Foxconn corporation to House Speaker Paul Ryan's congressional district in southeast Wisconsin-with $3 billion in tax incentives and promises to ease off on regulations. Leah Vukmir, who is running for U.S. Senate, traveled to the district to campaign for him. Schachtner overwhelmingly won St. Croix, Pierce and Dunn counties, while Jarchow carried Polk and Burnett counties.
