Shane Lowry well placed after first round of Farmers insurance Open

  • Palmer Has 1-Shot Lead Over Defending Champion Rahm on 2nd Day of Farmers Open

He had a huge spectator following ducking for cover right from the outset with a wild drive left that came to rest close to the event Media Centre and located between the first fairway of the South Course and the 10th hole of the North Course.

If playing 72 holes isn't exactly the bar one might expect from a 14-time major champion, it's a reality Woods seems comfortable with, at least at the moment.

After finding the green with his second shot from the rough, he faced the daunting prospect of having to two-putt from 80 feet, and he judged his pace beautifully, stroking his first putt to within two feet of the cup.

He said he was delighted to be playing without pain after spinal fusion surgery last April but the day was not without its frustrations.

The cut was at 1-under 143, which was starting to look out of reach for Woods.

Woods followed his poor drive on the 10th of the North course with another off the 13th tee, which produced an angry reaction. Well-executed chip left him a short putt. After riding out an early group of bogeys, Power played his way inside the cut line at - 1 and held on there right up until the 18th hole where a bogey took him out of the negative numbers.

I had to hit some really good shots on that back nine, and I did that.

Woods is 1-over at the turn on the South Course after a front nine that saw him grimace, curse and swing an iron through the air in frustration.

Certainly the Farmers Insurance Open has never demanded so much attention in its second round.

A wild drive was saved by a ideal flop shot to escape with par on No. 6.

With a two-putt from around 60 feet for birdie a possible big deal, Woods hit a handsome lag to a couple of feet. The North Course used to be easier than the South, but was toughened up during a recent renovation.

Tiger Woods is above the projected cut at the Farmers Insurance Open - his first tournament of the season. Jason Day, former world No. 1, is one of three players at 7-under and in the thick of contention.

The Kiwi appears to have regained his form after missing the cut in his previous three efforts on tour.

To that end, Woods has spent time after his rounds practicing, something that was rare in the last few years as he sought to recover from his back surgeries. He returned at Torrey Pines a year ago and opened with a 76 on his way to missing the cut.

Woods pulled a shot back with a textbook birdie at the par-five sixth, firing his tee shot 308 yards down the middle of the fairway. The Co Down man made four birdies and a bogey in 11 holes to move up to tied fifth on 10-under par when play was suspended until this morning.

But he was back at one-over after a bogey at the par-five 13th, where he was in the right rough off the tee. But he hit numerous shots left - the dreaded two-way miss - with the worst coming at the 13th and leading to a double-bogey.
