  • Oil tanker SANCHI owned by an Iranian shipping company

A tanker carrying Iranian oil that collided with a Chinese freight ship in the East China Sea on Saturday was still ablaze this morning, a South Korean coast guard official said as emergency rescue teams continued to search for the missing crew.

The ministry reported the crew of 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis went missing late after the collision set the 274-meter oil tanker on fire late on January 6.

The Iranian tanker was carrying 136,000 tons of gas condensate, worth about $60 million based on current crude oil prices. By comparison, the Exxon Valdez was carrying 1.26 million barrels of crude oil when it spilled 260,000 barrels into Prince William Sound off Alaska in 1989.

State media CCTV showed pictures of the tanker ablaze and billowing plumes of thick dark smoke.

The 21-strong crew aboard the Hong Kong-registered CF Crystal have all been rescued and the ship was not severely damaged.

The Panamanian-flagged oil tanker Sanchi was being operated by Iran's Glory Shipping. The ministry said oil spilled into the sea, but did not specify the area of contamination.

That was nearly twice the size of the Exxon Valdez spill, which ravaged Alaska's coast in 1989. The National Iranian Tanker Co describes itself as operating the largest tanker fleet in the Middle East.

It's the second collision a ship from the National Iranian Tanker Co has been involved in in less than a year and a half. The Foreign Ministry said in a separate statement that the cause of the incident was under investigation.

The Sanchi has operated under five different names since it was built in 2008, according the United Nations -run International Maritime Organization.

"We are working very closely with the relevant authorities to establish the facts surrounding the collision", it said in a statement.
