  • Mumbai man sucked into MRI machine dies in 2 minutes

Mumbai: A 32-year-old man died after he allegedly inhaled an excessive amount of liquid oxygen in the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) room at a hospital here, a senior police officer said Sunday.

The machine's magnetic field got activated pulling both the man and the cylinder with great force.

. "No security guard was either present to tell him that he should not carry oxygen cylinder with him to MRI room", Solanki told Asia News International.

One of his relatives and the male nurses managed to pull Maru out of the machine but his body was swollen and he was bleeding heavily.

The victim's family has alleged that Rajesh Maru died due to negligence on the part of the hospital staff after he was admitted inside the MRI room with an oxygen tank when metal items are strictly not allowed in MRI rooms.

Mr Maru's devastated family has accused the hospital of negligence, saying the machine was meant to be switched off when he walked in the room.

He had accompanied a relative for an MRIscan in the hospital, reports said. The civic body has ordered an inquiry to ascertain how the cylinder made it to the MRI room where metal objects are not allowed.

Objects getting sucked into a MRI machine is a serious concern. Dr Bharmal said that when the patient was brought to the MRI centre with an oxygen cylinder, the ward boy at the centre took the patient inside the room.

He was pronounced dead 10 minutes after being rushed to intensive care.

It is thought the cylinder was damaged after hitting the machine. Maru's relatives state that the ward boy was responsible for leaving the MRI machine on which led to his death. The incident occurred at the BMC-run Nair Hospital. It seems that when the cylinder got pulled by the machine's magnetic force, oxygen started leaking. The ring finger of his left hand was also crushed by the machine.

An FIR has been filed in the matter with the Agripada police station, confirmed Deputy Police commissioner (zone 3), Virendra Mishra to DNA. From Fortis Hospital charging the family extravagant fees to doctors of Max Hospital declaring wrongly pronouncing a baby stillborn, medical practitioners and their wrongful diagnosis and practices are now coming to light.
