Flights later resumed but all passengers were being advised to check their flight status, the airport said in a tweet, adding "up until now, 320 flights have been cancelled".

Air traffic was also suspended and several flights got cancelled for few hours in Netherlands as winds of up to 90mph (140kph) blew across the country.

A 59-year-old man was killed by a falling tree near Emmerich, and a 68-year-old man in North Rhine-Westphalia lost control of his transporter in the strong winds and died. "The fire service will be stabilizing the building once the wind has died down".

National broadcaster NOS reported that the main railway station in The Hague was closed because of fears that parts of its new glass roof would be blown off, while large stacks of containers in the port of Rotterdam came down in the storm.

Netherlands water authorities were forced to close and inflatable storm barrier to prevent flooding as water levels began to rise around Amsterdam.

Police temporarily closed the centre of Almere, a Dutch city with about 200,000 residents lying just east of Amsterdam.

"Since this affects many long-distance connections, there are effects on the entire rail services, also internationally", Deutsche Bahn said.

The port of Ghent in Belgium was closed because of the risky winds as well as tram traffic being stopped in parts of the capital of Brussels.

By mid-afternoon, the storm had passed over Belgium and the Netherlands and into Germany, where police reported several injuries.

Deutsche Bahn spokesman Achim Stauss told n-tv television that the measure would remain all day as a precaution.

The square in front of Cologne's famous Cathedral was partially cordoned off Thursday as a precaution amid fears masonry could be blown loose. A supermarket roof peeled off in Menden.

On a lighter note, a baby boy was born in his parents' vehicle in the western city of Cologne as they were caught up in the traffic chaos unleashed by storm, city authorities said.

In Britain, power was knocked out to thousands of homes.

Dutch insurers said on Friday, January 18, that fierce storms that whipped across The Netherlands caused 90 million euros ($111 million) in devastation, as the country's train service slowly creaked back into gear. Even Prince Harry and his fiancee Meghan Markle were delayed in their train trip to Cardiff in Wales.

Black Sea ports in eastern Romania were also closed because of the high winds, authorities said.

In Germany's west at least 100,000 people experienced power outages with schools closing down.
