  • Facing Scrutiny, President Trump's “Voter Fraud” Commission Shuts Down

Trump disbands voter fraud commission, says...

A White House statement is blaming the decision on numerous states that have refused to provide voter information to the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders explained the president chose to dissolve the commission by executive order "rather than engage in endless legal battles at taxpayer expense".

The former head of President Donald Trump's recently disbanded election integrity commission has charged two people with double voting in Kansas and Colorado during the 2016 election. They fought hard that the Commission not see their records or methods because they know that many people are voting illegally.

Kris Kobach, Kansas' secretary of state, announced Thursday that Bailey Ann McCaughey and Que J. Fulmer are facing accusations involving voter fraud.

Yet state and local election officials, including some Republicans, said they refused to hand over voter information because of privacy concerns as well as the fact there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud.

"The commission's entire objective was to legitimize voter suppression", Vanita Gupta, president of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and former head of the Justice Departments Civil Rights Division, told the Times.

On Thursday morning, Trump tweeted that the "system is rigged" and called for a move toward "voter ID".

Trump won the Electoral College, giving him the White House, but he lost the popular vote to Clinton by nearly 3 million votes.

Dunlap on Wednesday said Kobach and his allies "were the ones that were stonewalling", saying they had "very definite ideas of what they wanted this commission to come up with".

"If the president seems fine with that now, then all the better for all of us".

Kobach said he intends to work closely with DHS and the White House and expects the bulk of the DHS investigation to be done by midsummer.

"ICE has scant experience in this area and the databases Kobach wants DHS to use... are not designed for that goal and do not automatically reveal the status of immigrants who become USA citizens, which means thousands of noncitizen who are subsequently naturalized could be mistakenly tagged as illegal voters", Berman wrote this week. Mississippi Republican Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann said that when he received the data request, his response would be to tell the commission to "go jump in the Gulf of Mexico and Mississippi is a great State to launch from". "I think it is highly improper to use DHS to further the failed and misguided attempts of the commission". "It was that scrutiny that was forced upon the commission that successfully led to the need for transparency which caused the commission to fail", he said, promising that the administration's new tactic won't go unchallenged by the civil rights community.

Ultimately, the panel held only two meetings, and Democrats on the commission complained they weren't being kept up to date about the group's actions. "Every American who cares about the right to vote should breathe a sigh of relief now that it no longer exists".
