  • Walmart workers win pay rise after Trump tax cuts

WWJ Business Editor Murray Feldman reports this will include two locations in MI: one on the south side of Lansing, and the other on Northwestern Highway in Farmington Hills. The closures are to occur by January 26.

In a statement on Twitter, the company said: "After a thorough review of our existing portfolio, we've made a decision to close a series of clubs and better align our locations with our strategy".

They added that it's never easy to close stores and they'll be working with those impacted.

"We know this is hard news for our associates and we are working to place as many of them as possible at nearby locations", John Furner, president and CEO of Sam's Club, said in the statement. Walmart Stores, Inc., the warehouse chain's parent company, closed hundreds of locations in early 2016.

Local elected officials also weighed in on Sam's Club's shuttering.

The company said the wage increase - $11 per hour starting pay - benefits all hourly USA workers at its stores, including Sam's Club, as well as hourly employees at its websites, distribution centers - including the one in Rock Falls - and its Bentonville, Arkansas, headquarters. "Wow! This is a shock to me", customer Valeria Shropshire of Durham told ABC11.

"The closest one, I guess, is now in Erie (Pennsylvania)". We'll also be able to lean into the areas members care about most, including fresh food, Member's Mark, and exciting merchandise.

"They provide a lot of things that you can't get other places, the gas", Becky, Elyria club shopper, said. They had no prior warning or anything. "At Christmastime, and every other week, I would get paper products and the rotisserie chicken. It's sad. It is sad", she said.

Sam's Club, a membership warehouse, is owned by retail giant Walmart. The one-time bonus between $200 and $1,000 will be given to Walmart employees who won't receive a pay raise. And they need to just start hustling to find a job. "We will be closing some clubs, and we notified them today".

In Louisiana, a Sam's Club in Baton Rouge that employs 176 workers was scheduled to close on Thursday, with hourly staff being terminated as of March 16 and managers as of April 13. "The rise of e-commerce is leading to higher wages".
