  • State of emergency in Ethiopia as country's prime minister resigns

Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn's surprise resignation came after sustained anti-government protests in the East African country.

"We strongly disagree with the Ethiopian government's decision to impose a state of emergency that includes restrictions on fundamental rights such as assembly and expression", the embassy said in a statement.

Nonetheless, the span of the condition of the crisis was not uncovered in the communicated, the Anadolu news office revealed.

The Council of Ministers' said the emergency is being declared because the protests have caused injuries and deaths, massive displacement of citizens, the destruction of properties, attacks based on ethnic lines and threats against the constitutional order of the country.

He said he wanted to smooth the way for reforms.

Desalegn said in a broadcast address, "I see my renunciation as key in the offer to do changes that would prompt practical peace and majority rules system".

More than 6,000 political prisoners have been freed since January as the government has struggled to placate discontent.

For as long as couple of years, Ethiopia has fumed with social agitation.

Supporters of Bekele Gerba, secretary general of the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC), chant slogans to celebrate Gerba's release from prison, in Adama, Oromia Region, Ethiopia February 14, 2018.

Ethiopia is the second most populous country in the African continent, with 100 million people in more than 40 ethnic groups.

Young men had blocked roads leading out of the capital with rocks and burning tires, disrupting public transportation. The prisoner release came after protests and a strike in Oromia that urged the government to fulfil its pledge in this regard.

The move follows yesterday's resignation of Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn both as Prime Minister, Chairman of EPRDF and his own party, the Southern Ethiopian People's Democratic Movement (SEPDM).
