FIFTY SHADES FREED Film Adaptation Opens Worldwide

  • When will Fifty Shades Freed be on Amazon Video, DVD/Blu-ray?

Worldwide, the three movies have earned $1.1 billion to date, an especially huge number considering they cost just $150 million total to make. This weekend, 'Fifty Shades Freed' opened to an even lower $38.8 million, down 54% from the first and 17% from the second.

In one of the more awkward box office pairings in memory, the rough-sex sequel "Fifty Shades Freed" was No. 1 at North American theatres over the weekend, while the cuddly-cute "Peter Rabbit" did well with children in second place.

Outside of the US and Canada, Freed took in $98.1 million. There were no signs that the #MeToo movement slowed down the threequel, which came in less than 17 percent behind Fifty Shades Darker, a small drop for a third title, not to mention a third title in a franchise based on a book series that's faded from view. But for Universal, it's good news, as the studio still considers it one of its top properties.

"We are exhilarated with the results", said Jim Orr, Universal's president of domestic distribution.

If BDSM was not your cup of tea, there were still plenty of options at the box office. The CGI mixed with live action entry had a solid voice cast (including James Corden as Peter Rabbit, Daisy Ridley, Margot Robbie and Elizabeth Debicki) and apparently better marketing than Paddington 2 to overcome its 58% Fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes (it was a miserable weekend for reviews all around, but two of the three new releases were pretty review-proof). The film, which is co-financed by Village Roadshow, stars Stone, Sadler, and Skarlatos as themselves.

In the weeks to come, Peter Rabbit hopes to entice tots too small to turn out for Black Panther - opening in theaters February 16, the beginning of the long Presidents Day weekend - and other fare. The film brought in $9.8 million and is approaching $370 million domestically.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure ($6 million), Winchester ($5.1 million) and Den of Thieves ($2.9 million) round out the top ten.

Fox's "Maze Runner: The Death Cure" took in $23.5 million from 19,858 screens in 80 markets, taking the global total for the finale of the dystopian trilogy to $180 million. Afghan war drama "12 Strong" took $2.7 million (RM10.6 million) at 1,901 sites for a 24-day total of $42 million (RM165.4 million). Meanwhile, Eastwood's dramatic thriller places third with approximately $12.6 million.

Peter Rabbit brings an end to Jumanji's monopoly on family entertainment, landing with a pretty decent $25 million for the weekend.
