  • Mike Fisher Coming Back to Play for Preds

Mike Fisher announced on Wednesday that he is coming out of retirement and returning to the Nashville Predators.

Husband to Grammy Award-winning country singer Carrie Underwood, the 17-year veteran returns at a good time for the Predators, conveniently resting up during the first four months of the season and resuming his spot on the ice just in time for Nashville's playoff push in the Central Division, where the defending Western Conference champions trail only the Winnipeg Jets.

Fisher announced he was retiring in August, following the Predators' stunning run to the Stanley Cup Final a year ago.

Fisher shocked fans by telling them he'd be hanging up his skates after a solid 17 years in the National Hockey League. He wrote in The Tennessean that he believed the organization would bring home a title and that no one would "be happier than I will be to see it happen". "Mike Fisher is ending his retirement and will play for the #Preds this season". "I got a blessing from family and my wife". "I thought a lot about the run previous year and what could be".

Coach Peter Laviolette had discussions with Fisher and said the players are excited for Fisher's return. She wanted me to do it.

With Fisher returning to the team, the Predators add experienced depth to their already loaded center position.

And make no mistake, there is no doubt that Fisher will be in shape at some point before the February 26 deadline.

Fisher, who hails from Peterborough, Ont., amassed 276 goals and 585 points in his first 1,088 NHL regular-season games after breaking into the league in the 1999-2000 campaign with Ottawa, which drafted Fisher 44th overall in 1998.

That announcement came after Fisher spent the morning skating in full Predators gear on Wednesday morning at Bridgestone Arena.

The same can't be said for the power play, however, as Nashville will nearly certainly give Fisher a shot at skating with the man advantage. Last season, Fisher led the Predators in hits and was second among forwards in blocks.

But Fisher isn't coming back simply to be a warm body in the bottom six or a power play specialist, nor is that what the Predators are expecting.
