Flu activity on the rise across US — CDC

  • Officials Flu vaccine was ineffective for seniors last winter

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report released Friday confirmed that the flu season continues to intensify.

According to experts, influenza virus B, as well as H1N1 and H3N2, subtypes of influenza virus A, are among the most widespread in China as well as in the United States and Canada. That brings the nationwide number of child flu-related deaths to 53.

There have been five pediatric deaths in Texas, none in Houston. It said hospitalization rates for the flu are the highest since such figures began being tracked in 2010.

"We have not hit our peak yet, unfortunately", said Kristen Nordlund, a spokeswoman for the CDC. "Really, the bottom line is there is still likely many more weeks to go". Georgia's 37 flu deaths so far include one child, according to reports from the Georgia Department of Public Health. That is up from a total of 25 last week.

Flu cases this year are at record levels as patients pack emergency rooms across the country and on Long Island. Another hospital in the Atlanta area this week set up a mobile ER outside to handle flu cases.

"I would say to parents please don't panic", Salinas said in a phone interview. "I strongly encourage anyone who hasn't had a flu shot to get one and anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms to promptly consult with their health care provider about appropriate treatment options".

The flu season runs through late May.

The effectiveness of this season's flu shot has been extremely low, with the vaccine preventing only 10 to 20 per cent of infections caused by the dominant H3N2 strain affecting Canadians, researchers have found.

Now, the DPH has found 1,342 laboratory-confirmed cases of the flu between August 27, 2017 and January 13, 2018, with 615 of those cases resulting in hospitalization. (If water is not available, alcohol-based gels are the next best thing.) Wipe down hard surfaces including grocery carts, and avoid being around people who are sick. "Even if this is the case, it is still important to visit a provider so you can rule out influenza and learn about over-the-counter as well as self-care options like staying hydrated and resting that will get you back to optimal health as soon as possible". Also, don't go to work, and don't have your children go to school, when sick. The strain tends to cause more terrible ailments than different strains, and immunizations have a tendency to be less successful battling it. And half of these children were otherwise healthy.

Since 2009, Rush has conducted year-round planning for every flu season, which has helped mitigate its burden, Segreti said. Catching these characteristics early, drink plenty of fluids and get well-needed rest.

Encourage rest and couch time. But despite this information, many students are opting out of flu shots.
