Giants can zero in on Kevin Stefanski after Vikings hire John DeFilippo

  • Pat Shurmur makes first mark on Giants’ roster

The Vikings denied the New York Giants permission to interview quarterbacks coach Kevin Stefanski to be their offensive coordinator, ESPN reported Saturday. Some names that have been mentioned in recent weeks as possibilities are former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and Eagles running backs coach Duce Staley, who also has a previous working relationship with Shurmur.

With Stefanski losing out for the position, he is in line to rejoin Shurmur and become the Giants' offensive coordinator.

Hopefully, for Stefanski's sake, the Vikings increased his compensation when they informed him they were not going to let him talk to the Giants.

Shurmur does have most of his staff together with the Giants. But he'll have to stick as Minnesota's quarterbacks coach for another year while the Giants will have to go to Plan B at offensive coordinator. A good year with the Vikings could have him among the league's hot head coaching candidates as soon as January.

One of the individuals considered for the position was quarterbacks coach Kevin Stefanski, who has been with the Vikings organization since 2006 and worked his way from being an assistant to the head coach to being a positional coach. With guidance from DeFilippo, offensive coordinator Frank Reich and head coach Doug Pederson, Foles found a rhythm in the playoffs after an initially rocky takeover for the injured Carson Wentz. "He's done an outstanding job this year and I do believe he's earned the right [to be a head coach]". He, along with Shurmur, turned Case Keenum from a career journeyman into one of the NFL's best quarterbacks last season.

But that's a big assumption and also assumes Stefanski will have an interest in sticking around Minnesota after the Vikings stood in his way of getting a promotion this time.

One game isn't almost enough to dash the hopes that Shurmur could breathe life into a Giant team that shockingly underachieved.

Stefanski, 35, would've had play-calling duties as the Vikings offensive coordinator.

DeFilippo, who was a four-year letter-winner as a quarterback for James Madison, has taken his 11th job in what will be a 19th season of coaching.

Super Bowl brain drain underway in Philadelphia. He coached tight ends in 2014 and '15 and running backs in 2016.
