Mr Weinstein has been accused by more than 50 women of allegations ranging from rape to sexual harassment.
Most recently Uma Thurman, 47, came forward as a Weinstein accuser, claiming he'd assaulted her after they worked together on the 1994 film Pulp Fiction.
The Met Police are now investigating nine different accusations from women against Weinstein.
Schneiderman on Sunday filed a civil rights lawsuit against The Weinstein Company and Hollywood producers Harvey and Robert Weinstein, alleging "egregious violations" of the state's human rights and business laws and asking the court to intervene in the company's sale.
"As alleged in our complaint, The Weinstein Company repeatedly broke NY law by failing to protect its employees from pervasive sexual harassment, intimidation and discrimination", said Schneiderman.
The lawsuit could block the sale of the company. "Every New Yorker has a right to a workplace free of sexual harassment, intimidation, and fear". The suit seeks compensation for employees and to prevent executives who may have enabled the alleged conduct from taking power at the company in the future.
Schneiderman said the sale was "imminent" and that it could go through without giving Weinstein victims a chance to be properly compensated.
USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for The Weinstein Company for comment.
The suit comes after a four-month investigation by the Attorney General's office into mounting allegations against Weinstein and The Weinstein Company.
