Hawaii man says he's devastated about sending missile alert

  • Hawaiians believed that they were under attack for 40 minutes before the state

A former Hawaii state worker who sent a false missile alert last month said Friday (local time) he's devastated about causing panic but was "100 per cent sure" at the time that the attack was real.

The man was sacked from his job at the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency last week.

Although the man who pushed the button said he feels bad about what happened, he insisted the incident was not his fault.

He hopes that by speaking out, he can help prevent a similar incident from happening in the 49 other states. In the middle of the message it said this is not a drill then at the end I didn't hear exercise either because it was just an unannounced drill, unplanned and kind of a spriz thing where, you know, the sup supervisors weren't there.

"I heard, this is not a drill", the worker said.

The man said he heard the words "This is not a drill" in a voice he did not recognize and reacted as he was trained to do.

What's not adding up is what happened one minute before the false alert went out.

The former HI-EMA employee says that statement is inaccurate.

The notice informing residents the first warning was a false alarm wasn't sent for 38 minutes - reportedly because Hawaii Governor David Ige couldn't remember his Twitter password.

However, the worker who sent out the alarm said he only heard, "this is not a drill".

"The (state and the Federal Communications Commission) have false information in the reports", the man said. He went on to say another one of his co-workers thought the same.

An internal investigation found "that insufficient management controls, poor computer software design and human factors contributed" to the alert and a delayed correction message. I didn't sign off on any type of drill mistakes that I made.

Logan said he appointed Brig. Gen. Bruce Oliveira of the Hawaii National Guard.

"I can't say that I would do anything differently based on what I saw and heard", he told NBC.

"I think they came close to people figuring out who it is, and that clearly exposes him to great bodily harm". Before November, the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency's alerts were predominantly were about hurricanes, possible tsunamis and other Earth-driven events. I'm really not to blame in this. "We simply need to identify the problems in order to fix them - not just in Hawaii, but anywhere else where they may exist".

The fallout over the incident didn't stop with the former worker.

He says his supervisors never asked him what happened until days later.

Toby Clairmont, the agency's executive officer, also resigned before disciplinary action could be taken, and authorities are in the process of suspending another worker without pay.
