  • Jammu and Kashmir: Militants attack family quarters of Army camp in Sunjwan, two injured

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday targeted the BJP after terrorists attacked the Sunjwan camp killing two junior commissioned officers (JCOs), and said the party should be "begging forgiveness" of the nation for its "abject mishandling" of Jammu & Kashmir.

By evening, the Army said it had neutralised two attackers and cleared most of the 150 houses of the soldiers. The operation will continue until all terrorists are detained or killed, the reports added.

The operation, which is in its 15th hour at the time of writing, is still on.

The Congress reminded the government how Pakistan and its intelligence agency ISI have been exporting terror to India for long saying that as many as 342 soldiers have been killed in various such attacks in Gudaspur, Udhampur, Uri, Pampore, Nagrota and Kupwara areas in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab bordering Pakistan. The area was cordoned off and schools were closed.

He informed the House that during the operation, Colonel Rohit Solanki, Havaldar Abdul Hamid and Lance Naik Bahadur Singh and Neha daughter of Subedar Madan Lal Chowdhary were injured.

In Saturday's attack, the terrorists struck before dawn and managed to sneak into the camp from the rear side of the base after a brief exchange of fire with the sentry on its periphery.

The terrorists, who attacked the Army camp in Sunjwan, located on the outskirts of Jammu city, were believed to be from the "Afzal Guru squad" of JeM.

Earlier, the military station was attacked by Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayyeba on June 28, 2003, in which 12 soldiers were martyred and seven others injured.

The quick reaction teams of the Indian Army and reinforcements were immediately rushed to the spot to contain the terrorists inside one of the buildings.

Army helicopters and drones have been pressed to service recce the area, officials said.

While security forces were busy engaging the Pakistani terrorists, J-K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met and poke to the injured at the hospital. Almost a dozen soldiers were killed when militant attacked the camp in 2003. Inspector General of Police (Jammu range) S D Singh Jamwal told reporters in Jammu that around 4.55 am suspicious movement was noticed by the sentry and his bunker was sacked upon.

In December past year, a similar attack on highly fortified paramilitary camp in the region ended with killing of five Central Reserve Police Force personnel and three militants.
