After a long pursuit all offseason, the Boston Red Sox are closing in on a deal with free-agent slugger J.D. Martinez, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

MassLive.com reports that Red Sox President Sam Kennedy said he expects a name change to happen closer to Opening Day than the All-Star break. Martinez and his agent Scott Boras were aiming for something in the $200 million range for five or six years of his service, which was never going to be the case, but something lower than $120 million would be seen as a huge deal for the Sox in any other offseason.

Martinez should slot in nicely as the team's cleanup hitter. Dyson is a lifetime.258 hitter with 12 home runs, 131 RBIs and 204 steals in eight big league seasons, the first seven with the Royals.

The Red Sox, seeking to upgrade the middle of their lineup after finishing last in the American League in home runs in 2017, emerged as a potential suitor for Martinez earlier this offseason and reportedly offered him a five-year deal worth approximately $100 million last month. Martinez can play first base, he can play the outfield and he can DH. That leaves only designated hitter, a position now occupied by Hanley Ramirez and his $22 million contract. Unless a mystery suitor emerges, Ramirez will have to fight for playing time this season.

Ultimately, both sides should be pleased with this deal. If nothing else, he landed a 9-figure contract coming off last year's outstanding season.

It is a nice raise for the 30-year-old outfielder. However, if the Red Sox get him for five years at $110 million, it could turn into quite the bargain. Sure, they'll have to cough up money in the short-term, but they maintain long-term flexibility.

The deal, which includes an opt-out clause for Martinez, is pending a physical.

Needing just one more homer for that vaunted four-homer game, Martinez faced Wilmer Font in the ninth and etched his place in history.
