  • Snapchat has promised to roll out a new update in the coming weeks

Shares of the Snapchat parent company sank 6.1 percent on Thursday, wiping out $1.3 billion in market value, on the heels of a tweet on Wednesday from Kylie Jenner, who said she doesn't open the app anymore.

Jenner didn't spell out why she parted with Snapchat, but her comments were widely seen as a response to the service's recent controversial redesign. She wrote, "Or is it just me... ugh this is so sad".

Shares of Snap rose above their flotation price of $17 for the first time since July earlier this month despite a public backlash against Snapchat redesigns. Some users have even been sharing tweets and Instagram posts online with of a step-by-step "hack" on how to force the iOS App Store to download the old design, even if the solution is only temporary. On February 7, a share of Snap was worth $20.54, its highest value since last June. In its response, the company said it is aware that people hate the new Snapchat redesign, and therefore, it would bring in some changes that should be acceptable to the users. Snap has since officially responded to the petition signed by 1.2 million users in hopes that the company will roll back to the more familiar layout. Instead of splitting it up, the Friends and Discover screens will now have individual tabs on the same screen so that you can do more without leaving the page.

Ives believes the update was necessary to expand Snapchat's user base.

Defending the redesign, it added: "By putting everything from your friends in one place, our goal was to make it easier to connect with the people you care about most".

However, after the redesigned platform was made available, users were complaining that Snapchat is "too over complicated" now, and they are finding it hard to locate their friends.

"This same personalisation is also true of the new Discover, which will adapt to you the more that you use it", The Verge reported while quoting a company statement.

"For a very long time, we have been trying to clarify, or at least distinguish, the difference between friends and publishers", Spiegel said in November.
