Lawsuit Alleges Georgia Tech Coach Josh Pastner Sexually Assaulted, Threatened Woman

  • Oro Valley couple files sexual assault counterclaim against Josh Pastner

Former Memphis Tigers basketball coach Josh Pastner is facing an allegation of sexual battery by a couple after he filed a defamation suit against them.

The lawsuit was filed by Ron Bell, a former close friend of Pastner.

Pastner's lawyer, Scott Tompsett, issued a statement shortly after the filing, denying the sexual assault and calling Pendley's claim "malicious".

The alleged incident happened in February of 2016 while Pastner was still the men's basketball head coach at Memphis.

Pastner filed a defamation lawsuit against Bell and Pendley in January, two months after Bell told CBS Sports that he had provided extra benefits to a pair of Georgia Tech players.

In a statement released by his attorney, Pastner said the woman continued to initiate contact with Pastner and his wife, visiting their home and giving gifts to their children for two years after the alleged assault.

Pastner flatly called the accusation "a lie".

Pendley then began to cry and asked for Pastner to stop, but the lawsuit alleges he did not and instead threatened her not to say anything because he was the head coach of the basketball team and knew "very powerful people who would make Pendley's life "a living hell" if she ever mentioned" it.

Tompsett alleges that the new lawsuit is part of a failed smear campaign to blackmail Pastner by claiming he knowingly participated in NCAA violations. Bell, he says, has a history of criminal activity and "dishonest and antisocial behavior".

"I absolutely and unequivocally never assaulted or harassed Ms. Pendley and I am truly sickened by these false claims".

Georgia Tech lost 77-54 to Louisville on Thursday to fall to 11-13 overall and 4-7 in the ACC. "Upon learning of the allegations, I immediately informed law enforcement and officials at Georgia Tech".
