  • Police investigating 'possible shooting' on NSA campus at Fort Meade

Police and fire crews are responding to "an incident" at the NSA campus at Fort Meade in Anne Arundel County, fire and transportation officials said.

The FBI tweeted that it is aware of the incident and is sending personnel to the scene.

CBS News reported an SUV with bullet holes in the windshield could be seen crashed outside the gate.

At a news conference on Wednesday, the FBI said there was nothing to indicate what happened had any roots in terrorism, and further investigation into the three people inside the SUV has failed to turn up any terrorism connections.

Gunfire has rung out at the gates of the US National Security Agency (NSA) near Washington after a vehicle tried to drive onto the site of the secretive government body before crashing into a concrete barrier.

Mr. Johnson and Tommy Groves, an N.S.A. spokesman, said that terrorism was ruled out as a motive during preliminary investigations.

Meade, Maryland, headquarters Wednesday after a auto attempted to enter the agency's entrance without authorization.

The FBI has announced that they are looking into the shooting, and Donald Trump has been briefed on it as well.

In a statement, the NSA said an unauthorized vehicle attempted to enter the agency's campus in Fort Meade, Maryland, northeast of Washington, shortly after 7 a.m. and "weapons were discharged in the course of the incident".

An image taken from a WRC-TV helicopter shows the police and fire department response outside one of the facility's secure vehicle entry gates. The other was taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound the chest, according to a firefighter who was at the scene. "Meade. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone that has been affected", White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said.

Authorities closed down a nearby highway, causing long traffic delays amid the morning commute, news reports said.

The civilian and the police officer suffered non-life threatening injuries, but the condition of the driver, an unidentified male, is unknown.

But drivers have taken the wrong exit before and ended up at the tightly secured gates.

Two people are in custody and a third is being treated for injuries at a local hospital, local authorities said.
