Mayor Eric Garcetti told local news channel KABC-TV at the scene that it was unclear if the shooting was accidental.

The sobbing girl told him: "I didn't mean to".

A 15-year-old boy was shot in the head but doctors say he'll recover. "I had the gun in my backpack and I didn't know it was loaded and my backpack fell and the gun went off", Jordan Valenzuela, 12, said of what the crying girl told him, according to The Associated Press. Two other students and an adult suffered minor injuries from flying glass, according to authorities.

Steven Zipperman, chief of the Los Angeles School Police department, called the incident "very traumatic" for the kids in the classroom. The shooting occurred at Sal Castro Middle School, which adjacent to Belmont High School.

Dr Aaron Strumwasser, at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, said: "I think he will do fine..." All four patients at the facility are expected to make a full recovery, including one who is in the Intensive Care Unit.

A 15-year-old girl who was shot in the wrist also was hospitalized. Police said the shooting was gang-related but did not provide a suspect description.

Sky5 aerial video showed two officers escorting an apparently handcuffed female off the campus and to an awaiting LAPD patrol auto, where she was placed in the back seat.

Aerial TV footage showed a handcuffed female suspect being taken into custody and placed into a patrol vehicle while police went room to room, leading students out with their hands behind their backs.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, officers could be seen bringing several students out of a classroom with their hands behind their backs, aerial footage showed.

"I'm kind of afraid for my safety", said Oswaldo Gonzalez, 11, a sixth-grader at the middle school. Westlake, a mostly Hispanic area, is home to more than 20 schools.

"They thought it was a toy gun, but then it shot", Urbina said.

Another school shooting has people blaming everyone from the parents to school officials.

Staff members walked students out one at a time.

"They do it every once in a while", she said.

None of the identities of those who were injured have been released.

However, an internal district audit of 20 schools released in April found inconsistencies in how random searches were conducted. "Anything can happen, even at schools".

Police said they believe the shooting at the Salvador B. Castro Middle School was an accident. "I'm saddened that this kind of awful event is becoming far too common".

The child is represented by an attorney and has not spoken to detectives, he said.

Hernandez left work and sped to the school campus.

Los Angeles police responded to the incident at about 4 a.m. near Western Avenue and 29th Street.
